Episode 43: The Highway
The U.S. has many purportedly haunted highways; one is Florida’s I-4, sometimes known as the most dangerous in the country, has a small stretch in Seminole County known as “The Dead Zone. . .” and the name refers to more than its proclivity for disrupting cell phones and CB radios.
EPISODE INTEL:
In this investigation, we travel to northern Florida to examine a specific quarter-mile stretch of I-4 known as the Dead Zone. Located near the St. Johns River Veterans’ Memorial Bridge in Seminole County, this area is statistically recognized as one of the deadliest stretches of highway in the United States. We look into the archival records and local history to determine if the danger is purely structural or if it stems from a deeper, disturbed past.
Subjects of Investigation:
The Electronic Dead Zone: An analysis of the persistent mobile phone failures and satellite navigation disruptions reported by drivers approaching the Sanford bridge.
The Limestone Theory: A look at the geological makeup of the Florida landscape and how subterranean mineral deposits may interact with radio frequencies.
The Hurricane Donna and Charley Connection: We examine the uncanny timing of major tropical storms that struck the Sanford construction site at the exact moment the earth was disturbed.
The Lost Colony of St. John: Archival research into a failed 1887 immigrant settlement and the impact of the Yellow Fever outbreak on the Lake Monroe area.
The Carlson Family Records: Firsthand testimony regarding a gated "Field of the Dead" that once stood on private farmland before being incorporated into the interstate system via eminent domain.
